1- At UN meet, Modi calls for ‘reformed multilateralism’:-

       • The multilateral system needed to more representative, and India believed that “the path to achieve sustainable peace and prosperity” was through multilateralism,
Pm.modi said.
He was speaking at a high level dialogue of the UN’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on “Multilateralism after COVID­19: What kind of UN do we need at the 75th anniversary?”
 “Only reformed multilateralism with a reformed United Nations at its centre can
meet the aspirations of humanity,” Mr. Modi said in his speech focusing on India’s
battle against the coronavirus pandemic.
$300 bn package- He also detailed economic
measures to manage the impact of the pandemic, including a government pack-age of $300 billion to “bring the economy back on track,build modern infrastructure and put in place a technolo-gy­driven system”.
ECOSOC- Coordinate the work of the UN specialized agencies functional commissions, regional commissions and UN fund and program.
• Central forum for discussing international economic social issues.
• consists of 54 member states, elected by the General assembly with two third majority for 3 year term.


2- ‘270 mn Indians lifted out of poverty by UPA’:-

       • Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) study finds that 270 million  Indians were lifted out of poverty by the Con-
gress­led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and those who scoff at its record must know that economicst laugh at their ineptitude.


3- ‘Draft EIA  gives licence for violations:-

         • The Draft Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) 2020 is in keeping with the
pro­business agenda of the Narendra Modi government and gives “licence for wrongdoing and violations,” CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat said in a letter to Environment
Minister Prakash Javadekar.
EIA- ENVIRONMENT IMPACT ASSESSMENT IS A PROCESS OF EVALUATING THE LIKELY ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF PROPOSED PROJECT OR DEVELOPMENT,TAKING INTO ACCOUNT INTER-RELETED,SOCIAL-ECONOMIC CULTURAL AND HUMAN HEALTH IMPACT BOTH BENEFICIAL AND ADVERSE.
EIA in India is statutorily backed by the environment protection act 1986, which contain various provisions on a methodology and process.


4- Zydus Cadila plans to complete virus vaccine trials by March:-
   
      • Zydus Cadila plans to complete late­stage trials for its COVID­19 vaccine candidate
by February or March and could produce up to 100 million doses a year initially if it is successful, its chairman said.
Zydus Cadila’s vaccine candidate, ZyCov­D, is one of dozens being developedaround the world to fight the pandemic.
• Pact with Gilead- Zydus Cadila was among several Indian firms that reached a pact with the U.S.firm Gilead sciences last month , gaining a licence for developing countries, in-
cluding India, to make and sell the drug.


5- ‘T.N. emerges as top investment destination:-

       • project survey- released by projects today  an international firm that tracks investment projects in the country.
Tamil Nadu emerges as top investment destination.
Second is Maharashtra , third is uttar Pradesh, fourth is Jammu Kashmir.

6- India registers a steep decline in maternal mortality ratio :-

        • The Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) in India has declined to 113 in 2016­-18 from
122 in 2015­-17 and 130 in2014,-2016, according to the special bulletin on Maternal
Mortality in India 2016-­18, released by the Office of the register General sample registration system (SRS).
One of the key indicators of maternal mortality is the MMR,  defined as the number of maternal deaths per 1,00,000 live births. The target 3.1 of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set by the United Nations aims to reduce the global maternalmortality ratio to less than 70 per 1,00,000 live births.
• The MMR of various States according to the bulletin includes Assam (215), Bihar (149), Madhya Pradesh(173), Chhattisgarh (159), Od-
isha (150), Rajasthan (164),Uttar Pradesh (197) and Uttarakhand (99). The southern States registered a lower MMR — Andhra Pradesh
(65), Telangana (63), Karnataka (92), Kerala (43) and Tamil Nadu (60).
• “Maternal mortality in a region is a measure of reproductive health of women in the area. As per the World Health Organization, maternal death is the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management,” noted the
bulletin.


7- No postal ballot facility for voters above 65: EC

          • The Election Commission on Thursday said the postal ballot facility for electors above the age of 65 in the Bihar As-
sembly elections, which would have been the first time it would have been used since the Centre had notified it on June 19, would not be implemented.
• The poll body said the option of postal ballots would be available to electors over 80 years of age, persons with disabilities, essential service workers and those infected with COVID­19 or
suspected to be.


8- Iran had gone silent on rail project: India
       
          • The Government of India says it had not received any response from Iran since December 2019 on the future of the Chabahar­Zahedan rail-way project that the state-
owned railway construction company IRCON was to have constructed and financed.The ONGC foreign arm OVL is also out of the Farzad-B gas field exploration project..


9- ‘Judicial review can’t be done  prior to Speaker’s decision’:-

         • Constitutional courts cannot
judicially review disqualification proceedings under the Tenth Schedule (anti­defection law) of the Constitution until the Speaker or
Chairman makes a final decision on merits.
• A 28­year­old judgment of the Supreme Court in Kihoto Hollohan versus Zachillu and Others has said that  “judicial review cannot be
available at a stage prior to the making of a decision by the Speaker/Chairman and a quia timet action would not be permissible. Nor wouldinterference be permissible at an interlocutory stage of the proceedings.”
